Getting published on the cover of The New Yorker is one of the most coveted achievements for many illustrators and designers. The symbiotic relationship between insider and outsider required to strike the right balance with Françoise Mouly, who has been the art editor at The New Yorker since 1993, is the the jewel in the crown. If she approves, and if a world event doesn't preempt the publication date, then mission accomplished.
Mark Ulriksen and Françoise Mouly have worked together for many years. He's had over 50 covers published. I admire Mark's intrepid dedication to the subjects he cares about most because that's what we expect when we see the published covers, an honest and crisp vision evoking the weekly “yeah, great cover”.
“There’s drama inherent in every pitch,” Mark says, about the baseball season. “For the next six months, there’ll be a cast of characters,” he says. “You follow your team with the kind of rapt attention that you would a good book. When fall comes, you get a grand finale. Last year, it all went to the Chicago Cubs. This year, who knows?”
