Welcome to a new series each month brought to you by our partner rep in the UK, @killingtonartsillustration, featuring a selected artist from our roster.
In 2011, @paulrogersstudio was commissioned by the United States Postal Service to create a postage stamp to honor jazz music. Art Director Howard Paine said that the only requirements for the stamp were to include the letters J-A-Z-Z and to not show any recognizable musicians, since the stamp was to honor all types of jazz music.
Paul shares, "The process for stamp approval can be complicated with a lot of people involved, so I decided to send three ideas in full color so the approval committee would have a clear look at my thinking. I didn`t want a rough sketch idea to be killed, and I thought with three color options I might have one that everyone agreed on. It turned out that everyone liked my favorite design, and the only changes were to add a female vocalist (I should have thought of that,) and to change the 44 to Forever because this was the beginning of the First Class stamps being usable forever, even if rates went up. The letters were hand-drawn and I was very pleased to have the stamp included in The Annual of the Type Directors Club.``
